REGULAR CLASSES - DOGS:

I would like to express my thanks to The Board and Members of the PWCC of the Potomac for offering me again, the opportunity to judge at your renowned and prestigious Specialty Show. The venue of course is "legendary" and rightly so, with the facilities being second to none. The camaraderie of participants is wonderful to experience, and the lovely entry an honour to judge.

Special mention must go to Walter and Brenda Day for their most warm and generous hospitality and once more to Walter for his unforgettable express tour of Washington, DC afforded to his Aussie Tourists. The Club is indeed fortunate to have such wonderful support from such true Corgi fanciers, whose own Corgis are indeed their special family. Also sincere thanks to that supreme Master of Ceremonies, Mike New, who catered to my every whim (within reason !!!!) and also to Chief Ring Steward Barbara Rounds and her team, for their efficient and courteous assistance. The unique Corgi tapestry rug was a most wonderful hospitality gift and certainly afforded much personal comfort on the long haul plane flights back to Australia, while that treasured Linda Ozelis DYGAE "Rock" Pembroke made the journey home safely and now has pride of place on the mantel--a continual reminder of a great experience and many new Corgi friends.

In the entry today I found much to admire. In the Class Dogs front assemblies were pleasing with quality bone and good tight feet (albiet some still approaching an incorrect round foot shape). Generally improvement in both length and desired angulation of upper arm was evident, although some exhibits, whilst displaying the correct height to length ratio in side-stance profile, lacked that free flowing easy extension and positive hind drive that is so pleasing to watch and an essential attribute in this herding breed. Some heads, while still maintaining that requirement of the Standard in being 'foxy in shape and appearance', were a touch too narrow overall and lacking in underjaw--although bites were acceptable. I noticed some lighter (almost glassy) eye colour, but generally pigment was excellent. While the earlier English Standards did actually ask for a 'hazel' coloured eye blending with the coat colour, the current 'variations of brown' serves to enhance the desired bold but kindly expression. I have concerns that many young exhibits, as in Australia, are just too low on leg to allow scope for correct balance on maturity, but I cannot forecast their ongoing development, especially with breeding lines that are unfamiliar to me, so it was a case of judging "on the day" and I will be well interested to follow the show careers of the many promising younger dogs I assessed and wish you all good luck for the future.

Diane Baillie "DYGAE" Welsh Corgis - Australia

PUPPY DOGS, 6-9 MONTHS (16 entries, 2 absent)

“As is often the case a difficult class with some most promising pups all at different stages of growth and development.”

1   MAR-WIL ROSHER CHILI MAC (Ch.Belroyd Lionheart x Mar-Wil Rosher Chili Bean) Breeders/Owners: Joyce P Robarge & Camilla M Thorne.  This 8 month old youngster did take my eye immediately. Attractive masculine head of correct proportions balanced with nicely shaped and well carried and placed ears. Good front with quality bone and neat firm feet, good topline and hind angulation.  Moved with positive hind drive. In excellent coat and condition he was quite a finshed pup overall, well presented and shown to advantage. RESERVE WINNERS DOG

2   CURIG FAERIETALE BOUTONNIERE ( Ch Aberlee Storm Force x Curig Trillium) Breeders/Owners: Barbara du Pree & Susan Neave.  Another eye catching pup with much appeal in his pleasing foxy head, kind eye and alert attentive expression. Sound front assembly complimented by good hindquarters and short neat 'hocks'. Just over 6 months of age, a smaller shorter bodied pup and obviously less mature than the winner. His topline was not as firm on the move at this stage, but he moved freely, especially in side gait, and should have a most promising future.

3  HONEYFOX TIZ EVAN EVANS (Ch Honeyfox Tiz Now x Ch.Honeyfox Mrs Tittlemouse) Breeder: Susan Strickland. Owner: Michaele A Gilpatrick. Attractive headpiece on this more mature R/W male presented in top bloom and overall muscular condition. Correct height to length balance complimented by excellent topline and firm hindquarters. However I would like more length in upper arm and also in front pastern. He stood quite wide in front although had good strength in bone to match his overall frame and movement was positive.

4  GAYLORDS SON OF SAM (Ch Dalarno Play It Again Sam x Gaylords Finnish Affair) Breeders: Larry Adams & David Guempel. Owner: Daniel Hartman. A real adolescent this youngster certainly possessed a firm skeletal frame that bodes well for future development. A stronger head-type with longer foreface at this stage, but good reach of neck, topline and very strong bone throughout. Not as positive in movement today but hopefully will strengthen on maturity.

PUPPY DOGS, 9-12 MONTHS (8 entries, 1 absent)

1  JORASH FOXWAY COOPERSTOWN (Dalarno Double Play x Foxway Jorash Star Traveler) Breeder/Owner: Ellen Schusterson. Most attractive headed pup with kind warm eye and alert foxy expression. Correct ratio of skull to foreface with good underjaw but in no way coarse. Firm level topline but more length in upper arm would allow for more extension in side gait, however he had well angulated  hindquarters with positive hind drive and presented a very finished outline.

2  TACHRITIA SNAPDRAGON (Ch Milestone Harris Tweed x Ch Taichritia Spiff N'Polish) Breeders: Joan Healey & Donna Gilbert. Owner: Joan D Healey. A classy pup with good height to length overall balance and topline held firmly on the move. He had good head proportions although a slightly warmer brown eye would further enhance expression

3  HAPPIHARBOR ROBT BROWNING (Ch.Woodhenge Star Muskateer. x Ch Pembryn Penny Black) Breeder/Owner: T Rutledge Parker. So much to like about this richly coloured sable male with such a handsome well proportioned head. Good neck, shoulder and front although needs to firm overall which I would expect on maturity. Consequently movement not as positive today and he could stand slackly at times, although his topline was held well when gaiting.

4  BROOKSHIRE MOONLITE ESCAPADE (Ch.Sandyshire Summer Jubilee x Brookshire Moonshadow) Breeders/Owners: Adrienne K & Bob Saffell.  Pleasing head type of correct proportions but would prefer more strength in foreface for a male. He had good quality in bone carried right down to his feet with a nice amount of daylight under him, allowing scope for further development. Spirit level topline but on the move, would like more fluid reach and drive.

DOGS, 12-18 MONTHS (6 entries)

1   Xlll MAPLES STORM AT READFIELD (Ch. Aberlee Storm Force x Ch. Readfield Moon O'er Xlll Maples) Owner/Breeders: Ellen C Childs & Marianne Y Read. Very pleasing in profile with very good breed type exemplified in head. He had a good layback of shoulder, a firm topline and strong strength in bone without coarseness. Ideally would like more length in upper arm and also in front pastern which would contribute to the more correct oval foot shape. However this dog moved steadily and soundly with quite a mature presence, that won him the class on the day.

2   AYLESFORD IVANHOE (Foxlair Reminiscing x Tokaras Aylesford Ms Congenial) Breeder/ Owner: Elizabeth Mercer. A flashy R/W male again with good height to length ratio of body with firm topline. He was well handled to show his many virtues. Head proportionate with warm eye and alert expression although a bit narrow in foreface at present. Well angulated fore and rear he moved cleanly both coming and going. A very close decision between 1 & 2 in this class.

3   RIVERSIDE VERY IMPORTANT (Ch Dwynella Take A Chance x Ch Riverside Out Of Necessity) Breeders: R & R Doty & D Shindle. Owners: B.Stiles & D. Shindle. Attractive R/W male with a more refined yet foxy head type quite in balance with his clean cut overall outline. Good topline, front and feet but would appreciate a bit more angulation in stifle behind and a darker eye would further enhance.

4   THLOT'S LAUGH A MINUTE (Ch. Brynlea It's All About Me x Appelbo's Cafe Royale) Breeder: Diane M. Gaskins, Owner: Winifred Huber & Diane Gaskins.  A medium sized sable male with attractive headpiece, good front and smart overall appearance. With his most happy outgoing nature his movement was difficult to review because of lack of ring training, but it was an honest performance and he well deserved his placement.

NOVICE DOGS (3 entries, 1 absent)

1   TRI'D N TRU DOUBLE FUN (Ch Putnam Forever Splendor x Ch Lost River's Dream Come Tru) Breeders: Kathleen Hash & Shawn Michael. Owners: Kathleen & Martin Hash. Most eye catching red headed 7 month old tricolour pup with flashy but quite acceptable white facial blaze and full collar. He presented an excellent overall profile when tabled, with good head (ears could be firmer but he's still a "baby") very warm eye, and very good forequarter construction. He displayed a firm level topline with nice square 'hocks', quality bone and for me, just the right amount of daylight under him for a youngster of this age. Lacked ring training so could not move to his advantage but just such a charmer.

2   PRESTON'S MINI COOPER (Sir Waler Raleigh V x Emma The Bama Dawg) Breeder: William C Perkins. Owners: Ashley Bourassa & Jacqueline Bourassa.  Well presented by his young handler, this R/W male put in an honest performance.with his  foxy masculine head type and bold workmanlike expression. However he was a bit overdone in condition and could stand slackly both front and rear while his topline tended to rise then slope away over the croup.

BRED BY EXHIBITOR DOGS (7 entries, 1 absent)

“A most closely contested class of very even quality. Congratulations to the breeders of these four place getters.”

1   SUNLINE SALMON FLY (Ch Esperence Revellie of Rosewood x Woodhenge Princess Leah)  Breeders/Owners: Ann & Warren Phillips. With a foxy masculine head of correct balance with strength in underjaw, good ear set, size and placement this quality R/W was presented to advantage. He moved steadily displaying a strong level topline with square hindquarters and positive movement.

2   ROSEWOOD ESPRENCE FLASH BACK (Ch.Esperence Sir Charles x Esperence Sheana Shazam's Opus) Breeders: L MacDonald & Liisa Coit. Owners: Lanalee Jorgensen & Liisa Coit. A most handsome R/W who immediately took the eye. Good head, front, topline with good quality round bone and presented in excellent coat and condtion. A real scene stealer and certainly an exhuberant showman who could display most positive and fluid side gait but he was bit unsettled today at times.

3   WAKEFIELD BRAMBLE  (Powdermill Pure Tribute For Salvenik x Ch Wakefield Glinda Of Oz) Breeders: Peggy Kessler & Pam Dent. Owners: P Kessler, P Dent & M Tomlin. Yet another quality male of moderate size, with lovely head type, neat front and feet, firm level topline, balanced length with muscular hindquarters and short strong 'hocks'  Moved well.

4   SANDYSHIRE'S PHILANDERER (Ch.Sandyshire's The Phantom x Ch Aberlee Summer Flight) Breeder/Owner: Patricia L Sandy-Smith.  Once more a lovely Corgi of obvious style with much quality in head type and overall  profile very similar to above placegetters. Not as ourgoing in his ring presentation today and front assembly could be tighter but he moved steadily.

AMERICAN  BRED DOGS (7 entries)

“Diversity in type made this a difficult class to assess.”

1   TRIPLE H BANJO BY A LAZYBROOK (Ch Summertime Enchanted Knight x Triple H Out In Left Field) Breeders: Deborah Cox & Patricia Barton. Owner: Kimberley P Scarey.  A taller quite mature looking paler R/W  with proud upstanding carriage, good posternum but with adequate length in leg that enabled him to carry himself well around the ring. I liked his head, lovely warm eye and alert attentive expression. With nicely arched neck and good shoulder layback he was a clear winner in this class.

2   TRIPLE H RANPRI'S HUCK FINN (Ch Stonehaven's Cartoon Caper  x Putnam Joyous Splendor) Breeder: Deborah Cox. Owner: Randy E Pritts. Quite a moderate Corgi overall with a very nice head, good eye shape and colour and complimented by firm well shaped ears. Good shoulder layback but shorter and a bit steep in upper arm and would like a bit length in body for ideal balance. Clean in movement but would like more extension in side gait.

3   HIGHFIELD AGED TO PERFECTION (Ch Bojojamile Bitof Blarney x Highfields On Cloud Nine) Breeder: Michele L Deltuva. Owners Laura Coleman & Michelle M Deltuva. This R/W had correct height to length ratio in body and size but would like a little more strength in both headpiece and bone throughout to balance his overall solid frame. Again he had good layback in shoulder and could present a firm topline in profile but a short and steep upper arm detracted from extension in side gait.

4   TERENELF'S PLAYING FOR KEEPS (Ch.Terenelf's Special Delivery x Terenelf's Trickeration) Breeder/Owner: Lois E Kay. This well presented, more compact style R/W had a well proportioned attractive head piece and was an alert attentive showman. He had good bone overall to compliment his size but was quite upright in front assembly and just needed more length in body to complete a correctly balanced profile.

OPEN DOGS (7 entries, 2 absent)

1   ELFWISH SWEET TAKLIN GUY (Ch.Salvenik Sweet Thoughts x Ch.Elfwish Gingerbread Lady) Breeders: Donna Francis & Sandra Wolfskill. Owners: Teresa Mulhausen, D. Francis & S Wolfskill. This dog possessed that indefinable touch of class that immediately draws attention, and on closer inspection he did not disappoint. Good breed type in head with lovely length of neck blending into well laid shoulders and firm level topline. Well let down in front with good bone and feet with well angulated hindquarters and strong short 'hocks'. Shown in full coat and excellent condition his overall balance and masculine presence was most apparent when moving - true and sound out and back and light and effortless in side gait. Only criticism was a slightly wide ear set, but he could hold them strongly when alerted and this was but a small cross to bear when appreciating the many virtues of this most worthy WINNERS DOG.

2   HARVESTWINDS FINALE (Ch.Cinnonie Regulus x Honeyfox Victorias Secret. Breeders: Susan Strictland & Roseann McPhearson. Owners: Jack & April Kerns. A shorter more compact R/W male very well presented by his young handler. He displayed good quality in head, with a firm topline and positive movement. A very honest Pembroke he just lacked to overall scope of my winner today.

3   NORTHRUN SIRIUS SAILOR (Ch.Sandfox Flying Finish UD HS AXJ MX x Ch Northrun Wind Walker) Breeder: Cathy Donovan. Owners: Gertrude Feriday and C. Donovan. Well marked and richly coloured redheaded tricolour of good breed type and balance overall. Would like a firmer front assembly, more strength in hindquarters and a stronger more level topline in profile especially in side gait.

4   TIM TAM IT'S MY TURN (Ch Colburn Heaven Only Knows x Sandifox Rhapsody) Breeders: Claire McClure & Larry McClure. Owners: Cynthia Courtney & C McClure. This R/W dog while having good proportions in profile had a broader ribcage and to me was carrying too much body weight which detracted from correct balance overall, and caused him to move widely both in front and behind, although he had a good topline both standing and on the move. He had quite a pleasing head and expression if a bit refined in ear shape and size

VETERAN DOGS, 7 YEARS AND OVER (6 entries, 1 absent)

“Always a pleasure to see the Veterans. All enjoying their day. All confident the "They Are The Champions."

1   CH KEEPSAKE IT'S SHOW TIME NA (Brynlea Royalfox Show Stopper x Brynlea Can U Keep A Secret) Breeder: Molly A Forbes. Owners: Dr Sandra L Hanson & Molly A Forbes. A "Young Veteran" at 7 years of age with a noble foxy head type, very sound overall construction, good shoulder layback and balanced front and rear. Moved out well today but does not need to carry any more weight.

2   CH BRYNLEA MAKE MINE MINK (Ch Brynlea Royalfox Show Stopper x Brynlea Blackglama) Breeder: Brenda Stiles. Owners: Molly Forbes and Brenda Stiles. A most glamorous sable male with flashy white collar presented in impeccable coat and condition. Ten years 'young' and through his sire, a half brother to the winner, he was not as masculine in head type but certainly it was a very close decision between the two.

3   CH FOXTALE STARBOUND (Ch Honeyfox Starstruck x Ch Champagne N Caviar) Breeder: Virginia C Fitzgerald. Owners: Brian and Barbara B Boltz) This nine year old R/W male presented a clean appearance in profile with a sound front and feet. An attentive showman he moved very smartly and enjoyed his time in the ring.

4   WALGRAF'S SEAMASTER KOMANDO (Seamaster's Luck Be With Us x Seamaster's Lilly) Breeder: Lois Huntress. Owner: Douglas Mankovich.  Low set richly coloured red/sable with a squarer outline, foxy headpiece and workmanlike attitude and expression. He had quite a broad ribcage but presented with very clean hard muscular condition, especially for a nine year old. Well done.

REGULAR CLASSES - BITCHES:

My sincere thanks to the members of the Pembroke Welsh Corgi Club of the Potomac for inviting me to judge bitches at this year’s Specialty Show and for your courtesy in accepting my opinions of the day.  Special thanks to Chris Taylor for meeting me at the airport, to my ring steward, Barbara Bounds, and especially to Mike New for seeing to my every need.

I truly enjoyed going over your lovely bitches.  There was great depth of quality throughout the entry which made my decisions very difficult and resulted in many worthy bitches being left out of the ribbons.  Overall temperaments and bites were good and the dogs clean and well groomed.  There were a number of round cat like feet, but the most disturbing thing I found was the long loin/short rib cage on so many of the bitches--a problem that should be carefully watched.

To say that I love my judge’s gift, a beautiful Corgi figurine designed by Linda Ozelis, would an understatement.  I will treasure it always and thank each and every member of the club!

Mrs. Joan M. Jensen, Judge (MARTINDALE

(Editor’s note:  Mrs. Jensen is so very sorry that her entire critique was lost due to a malfunction of her tape recorder.  Shomehow the tape twisted and broke, and although she took it to a professional in the hope it could be restored, it was beyond help.  She is terribly upset about all of this and hopes that the club will please accept her most sincere apology.)

SWEEPSTAKES

I was honored to be invited to judge all the 2004 Sweepstakes classes for the Pembroke Welsh Corgi Club of the Potomac.  My sincere thanks to the Show Chair, Mike New, and his wife, Terri, Show Secretary, for anticipating any and every need.  My efficient ring steward, Barbara Bounds, helped keep the ring in order.  A very special thank you to Linda Ozelis for the ceramic figurine judges gift, depicting my personal kennel logo.  If, by chance, your club members find Linda and her magical kiln missing one day, you might look out West – we’ve been plotting a kidnap caper for years.  I was very pleased with the youngsters shown to me your gifts to the future.  Indeed, the future is bright if these are examples.  And, of course, those gifts from the past - the Veterans, were a joy to see, reveling in the applause so well-deserved.   Heartfelt thanks to all of you.

PUPPY DOGS, 6-9 MONTHS (15 entries, 1 absent)

1   MAR-WIL ROSHER CHILI MAC (Ch Belroyd Lionheart x Mar-Wil Rosher Chili Bean)  Breeder/Owner:  Joyce P. Robarge & Camilla M. Thorne.   R/w with beautiful balance, short hocks and excellent turn of stifle, length/height ratio was very good.  Little soft in topline right now, but this should firm up with maturity.  Very handsome and promising youngster.

2   CURIG FAERIETALE BOUTONNIERE (Ch Aberlee Storm Force x Curig Trillium)  Breeder/Owner:  Barbara du Pree & Susan Neave.   R/w quality pup.  Shorter in body than one above.  Excellent rear kick off and finish.  Good forechest and turn of stifle.  Topline also soft , but I’d expect improvement here with age.

3   HONEYFOX TIZ EVAN EVANS (Ch Honeyfox Tiz Now x Ch Honeyfox Mrs. Tittlemouse)  Breeder:  Susan Strickland.  Owner:  Michaele  A. Gilpatrick.  R/w with very good bone.  Shorter bodied.  Movement hampered by a shorter upper arm.  Sweet expression and lovely eye.

4   WINDCREST NADOLIG ENCHANTED (Ch Windcrest Zipn Indiana Jones x Ch Windcrest Amazing Grace)  Breeder/Owner:  Mary Elizabeth Simpson & Cathy Santarsiero.  R/w with good length of body and very pretty feet.  This pup has a lot of scope and will just take time to mature.  Needs to firm up in muscle tone; roadwork might help.

PUPPY DOGS, 9-2 MONTHS (7 entries, 1 absent)

1   TAICHRITIA SNAPDRAGON (Ch Milestone Harris Tweed x Ch Taichritia Spiff N’ Polish)  Breeder:  Joan Healy & Donna Gilbert.  Owner:  Joan D. Healy.   R/w very appealing, handsome youngster.  He has very good oval bone, well let down to the feet.  Neck flows into a good, firm topline.  Another very promising pup.

2   HAPPIHARBOR ROBT BROWNING (Ch Woodhenge Star Muskateer x Ch Pembryn Penny Black)  Breeder/Owner:  T. Rutledge Parker.  R/W quality pup, who left his furnishings somewhere outside the show ring.  Good balance and body length, purposeful movement.

3   BROOKSHIRE MOONLITE ESCAPADE (Ch Sandyshire Summer Jubilee x Brookshire Moonshadow)  Breeder/Owner:  Adrienne K. & Bob Saffell.  Yet another handsome youngster, who needs maturity.  Very good length of body, topline softer than I’d like at this age.  I suspect roadwork would help this, too.

4   LLANDIAN LOVIN’UP A STORM (Ch Aberlee Storm Force x Ch Llandians Love Me Love Me Not)  Breeder:  Barbara Gurwell & D. Connolly.  Owner:  Dianne Connolly.  Sweet expression on this pup with a beautiful dark eye.  Movement adequate.  For complete balance, he should be longer in body.

PUPPY DOGS, 12-15 MONTHS (7 entries, 1 absent)

1   SANDYSHIRE’S PHILANDERER (Ch Sandyshire’s The Phantom x Ch Aberlee Summer Flight). Breeder/Owner:  Patricia L. Sandy-Smith.  Very good reach and drive, nice short hocks.  Neck flows into his body, creating a lovely outline.  This youngster won this placing for his excellent balance.  He’s a real showman in the making.

2   XIII MAPLES STORM AT READFIELD (Ch Aberlee Storm Force x Ch Readfield Moon O’er XIII Maples)  Breeder/Owner:  Marianne Y. Read & Ellen C. Childs.  Remarks for the 1st place in this class also apply here, except that this one’s just a tad shorter in body.  I suspect that these two dogs will change places back and forth, for they’re very similar.  Both are very handsome with lovely eyes and expression.

3   RIVERSIDE VERY IMPORTANT (Ch Dwynella Take A Chance x Ch Riverside Out Of Necessity)  Breeder:  R. Doty & R. Doty & D. Shindle.  Owner:  B. Stiles & D. Shindle.  R/w with a full white collar.  This dog’s reach is better than his rear drive, in part because of a shorter rib cage and longer loin.

4   THLOT’S LAUGH A MINUTE (Ch Brynlea It’s All About Me x Appelbo’s Café Royale)  Breeder:  Diane M. Gaskins.  Owner:  Winifred Huber & Diane Gaskins.  R/w with light sableing.  When he moves, he can really move out; however, it was evident that more training is needed. He can stand slack (east-west) in front, but he doesn’t move that way.

JUNIOR DOGS, 15-18 MONTHS (4 entries, 1 absent)

1   ROSEWOOD ESPRENCE FLASH BACK (Ch Esprence Sir Charles x Esprence Sheana Shazam’s Opus)  Breeder:  L. MacDonald & Liisa Coit.  Owner:  Lanalee Jorgensen & Liisa Coit.  R/w very well balanced dog.  He’s a good-sized male and I hope he has completed his growth.  Excellent side gait.  Dark eye, his expression is enhanced by the chiseling underneath.

2   SUNLINE SALMON FLY (Ch Esprence Revellie Of Rosewood x Sunline Leap Of Faith)  Breeder/Owner:  Ann & Warren Phillips  A shorter-bodied dog  than Number 1.  Good dark eye and expression.  Toes in going away.

3   FOXTALE’S DARTER AT KAYBE (Ch Hum’nbird Keepn Up’pearances x Foxtale’s Scarlet Tanager)  Breeder:  Virginia Fitzgerald.  Owner:  Sherryn Viebrock.  Has good length.  In softer body condition and somewhat overweight.  Toes out on right foot; this does not correct itself.

PUPPY BITCHES, 6-9 MONTHS (17 entries, 2 absent)

“This was THE class of the day.  All the puppy bitches had on their party clothes, dancing shoes and were ready to strut!  They had fun and so did I.”

1   BRYNLEA GAYLRD BIKINI BOTTOM (Gaylord’s Pilgrims Pride x Gaylord’s Beach Baby)  Breeder/Owner:  Brenda Stiles.  Lovely, lovely, sable puppy of excellent quality.  Spirit level topline, which held on the move.  Short hocks and excellent bone.  Strong contender for BEST PUPPY IN SWEEPS.

2   HERONSWAY TWO FOR THE SHOW (Hum’nbird Nathaniel Hawthorne x Ch Heronsway Sweet Sixteen) Breeder:  Anne Bowes.  Owner:  Cathy Santarsiero & Mary-Elizabeth Simpson.  Another quality bitch of  excellent length/height ratio.  Good mover, especially from the side.  Wish she had more bone for her size.

3   HERONSWAY DREAM ON (Ch Aberlee Storm Force x Ch Heronsway Daydream Believer)  Breeder/Owner:  Mrs. Anne H. Bowes.  R/w very pretty bitch. The baby of this class, but not dismayed or intimidated in any way.  Short hocks, good bone.  Shorter upper arm hampered reach.

4   ELFWISH SALLY RIDE (Ch Aberlee Storm Force x Ch Elfwish Amelia Airheart)  Breeder/Owner:  D. Francis & S. Wolfskill.  R/w with lovely dark eye.  Feet somewhat rounder than standard calls for.  The eldest of this class, she was also the most mature in body.  A very good mover, once she understood what was desired of her.

PUPPY BITCHES, 9-12 MONTHS (14 entries, 2 absent)

1   HAPPIHARBOR LARK ON THE WING (Ch. Woodhenge Star Muskateer x Ch. Pembryn Penny Black)  Breeder/Owner:  T. Rutledge Parker.  Sable bitch with excellent length, nice short hocks and beautiful feet.  Quality throughout.   Very fluid movement when moving around the ring.   She really opened up in the final selection and I was pleased to award her BEST PUPPY and BEST IN SWEEPSTAKES.

2   JORASH FOXWAY WHO’S ON FIRST (Dalarno Double Play x Foxway Jorash Star Traveler)  Breeder/Owner:  Ellen Schusterson.   Bigger bodied bitch with a lot of bone.  Won this placement on movement.  Good dark eye.  Quite finished for this age.

3   COVENTRY B’QUEST (Ch Sandyshire’s Sunny Delight x Ch Coventry Candle N The Wynd)  Breeder/Owner:  Bill Shelton & Steve Leyerly & Beckie Williams.  Beautiful neck on this youngster.  She has excellent length.  Another that will take a while to mature and come together, but I have no doubt that shell be a real contender when that happens.

4   MYSTICAL SLAM DUNK (Ch Aberlee Bransby x Ch Mystical To Have And Have Not HT)  Breeder/Owner:  Deborah Beal.  R/w bitch, who, when she settled down was a very good mover.  She has a lovely head; a slightly larger ear would complete the picture.

JUNIOR BITCHES, 12-15 MONTHS (19 entries, 4 absent)

“Another class teeming with quality.  Any of these bitches would be very welcome in my kennel.”

1   LLANDIAN TALKIN BOUT MY GIRL (Ch Aberlee Storm Force x Ch Llandians Love In The Mist).  Breeder/Owner:  Dianne Connolly.  R/w bitch with very good length of body.  Short hocks.  Not a big bitch, but well balanced.  Pretty headed with a lovely eye and expression.  BEST JUNIOR IN SWEEPSTAKES

2   XIII MAPLES STAR CASTLE (Ch Aberlee Storm Force x Ch Readfield Moon O’er XIII Maples)   Breeder:  Ellen Childs & Marianne Read.  Owner:  Ellen Childs & Mark Russo.  Another quality bitch, with good length, turn of stifle, and nice short hocks.  She’s another who toes out with her fright front foot when standing, but doesn’t when moving.

3   SANDYSHIRE’S PHAEDRA (Ch Sandyshire’s The Phantom x Ch Aberlee Summer Flight)  Breeder/Owner:  Patricia L. Sandy-Smith.  R/w paler bitch, with an absolutely lovely head and outline.  I’ve admired this bitch before; today she just wasn’t at top form.  She seemed to labor in movement some times, yet then would really stride out.  In excellent condition and presented very well.

4   SANDFOX HEAVENLY BODY (Ch Tallyrand No Greater Love x Ch MACH Tallyrand Angels Are Watching TD PT)   Breeder:  V. Sandage & L. Zelenski & M. Young.  Owner:  Vicki Sandage, DVM.  This bitch’s outline was excellent, and she had very good side gait.  Lovely dark eye and good expression.  Ears are slightly pointed and low set, creating a less than perfect triangle.

VETERAN SWEEPSTAKES

In all good conscience, it’s impossible for me to individually critique these Corgis.  Each had his or her own pluses and minuses that I’m sure we’ve all read about in previous Specialty critiques.  I was so pleased to have them in the ring, being over 7 years to over 11 years, and honored to have the opportunity to judge them.  They, too, had on their dancing shoes, more worn perhaps, and they were a little more sedate in their strut than the puppies had been.  Some breathed heavier and others had fewer teeth.  I congratulate each and every one of them.

BEST OF BREED

Thank you to all exhibitors in this Best of Breed contest for such a wonderful entry of Pembroke Welsh Corgis. All excelled in so many areas, all were presented to advantage and all were worthy of top awards. Todays entry was most impressive in the depth and quality of both sexes and I was therefore able to indulge in my personal preferences - this was certainly a most difficult and yet enjoyable task. To me you all deserved that Special Select. Thank you for accepting my ultimate decisions with grace and good sportsmanship.

BEST OF BREED

CH FOXLOR SHAFRHAUS SAMMY SOSA  (Ch Foxway Legacy Continues x Schafrhaus Foxlor Sassy) Breeders: Lori Sawyer & Charles Kruger, DVM. Owners: Beth Dowd & Lori Sawyer & Sandra Mottes. This spectacular tricolour male certainly made his entrance with flamboyant style and reachy side gait. He was my ideal size all over for a male and a sheer delight to examine on the table. Head "foxy in shape and appearance," correct ratio of skull to foreface, with just a nice amount of chiselling under those expressive dark eyes to add that extra touch of class. Good bite and strength in underjaw. Excellent well muscled yet elegant neck blending into well angulated forequarters and spirit level topline with correctly shaped ribcage and required slight taper to strong muscular hindquarters that is often so difficult to obtain. As previously stated this dog was a most enthusiastic showman, but I do like to see my Corgis present with a steady and synchronised easy movement - so at my request his handler steadied him back, the dog responded in every way and consequently gave me all that I wanted to see. Congratulations on an excellent performance in the company of some really top class exhibits.

BEST OF OPPOSITE SEX

CH DALARNO SECOND EDITION (Caralon's Casper at Gaylord x Ch Dalarno Banner First Edition) Breeder: Carrie P Harris. Owners: Anna T Wyatt & Carrie P Harris. A very sound well constructed R/S/W bitch, she was most pleasing to examine hands on, and the more the class progressed the more her virtues became apparent. Excellent height to length in body profile, with quality in head, correct three to five ratio of foreface to skull, good width between ears and yet feminine in type and expression. She was well ribbed back with spirit level topline and the square sound hindquarters with driving short 'hocks' that enabled her to move truly with good free extension both fore and rear. An ideal compliment to my BOB Male.

BEST OF WINNERS

SANDYSHIRE'S PHAEDRA (Bitch) (Ch Sandyshire's The Phantom x Ch Aberlee Summer Flight)  Breeder/Owner:  Patricia L Sandy-Smith.   A R/W bitch of ideal size and balance.  She displayed excellent breed type in her sweet headpiece, good neck, shoulders and front assembly, with a very clean outline, level topline and good hindquarters.  Very well presented to show off her many attributes to advantage, she displayed just so much charismatic feminine appeal. I was delighted to make her my Best of Winners.

BEST PUPPY IN CLASSES

BRYNLEA GAYLRD BIKINI BOTTOM (Gaylord’s Pilgrims Pride x Gaylord’s Beach Baby)  Breeder/Owner:  Brenda Stiles.  It was a most enjoyable experience to judge the Best Puppy in Classes from a keenly contested lineup, my ultimate winner being such a glamorous R/S/W youngster whom I now note was awarded Reserve Winners Bitch under my respected Co-Judge Joan Jensen.  I have but rarely used the term "pretty" in a critique, but at just 7 months of age, that is certainly what she is!  With such a lovely headpiece, eye and expression, very sound front with quality bone right down to correct feet, excellent reach of neck for her age with good shoulder length and angulation, level topline balanced with commensurate hindquarters.  Moved stylishly with very good reach and drive for her age.  I just wished but no way could she fit in my suitcase.

JUNIOR SHOWMANSHIP

Congratulations to the Juniors.

Thank you PWCCP for inviting me to judge the Junior Showmanship classes at your 2004 Specialty. It was a privilege and an honor and the memories of your Specialty will stay with me always.

To me, it is so wonderful to see our youth participate in the fancy and it is through Junior Showmanship that many of our youth become involved. We all need to make a concerted effort to help propel them forward, with our support and leadership. The attitudes, responsibilities and values that they learn here, from us, will be valuable to them in so many other aspects of their lives.

The Juniors that exhibited to me at the Specialty all did a marvelous job. I was impressed with their poise, ease and the attention they exhibited towards their dog. They each have what it takes to succeed and I congratulate all of them!  I wish the Juniors continued success and a great Junior experience. It will be my pleasure to watch them through the years and I hope that one day I will have the pleasure to share the ring with them again.
